DJ MetroGnome is at it again with the release of a new project called Collections & Connections.

Genres:Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul
Released: May 2012

"this is a concept mix based around the connections between songs (samples, wordplay, etc). i basically had the general idea, but didn't have the order laid out at all... created it as I went. It was a fun and interesting process with a million possibilities. I wasn't going for the most rare records or anything, just exploring. Hope you dig it."

Today I was on mindlessly surfing the net looking for more video clips on Dilla. I came across a J.Dilla tribute show with Tony Touch that contained freestyles from several notable emcees, one of those MC's being Black Thought [of the Legendary Roots Crew]

[Click here to listen to Black Thought free-style referenced]

This dude rips it for like three minutes straight.  It almost seems like he left out of consciousness for a moment & just let something else take over [maybe the ghost of some underground rapper from the 80's]......so much so that  [i almost s!@#$ my pants] none of the other mc's [q-tip] want to go on after him.

That's when a light came on [Bing!]! The reason why a good free-style is so intriguing and is because it is literally a real time sync between the conscious and subconscious mind.

The Movie Inception touches heavily on dreams consciousness and perception of reality [all subjects included in the study of lucid dreaming]. In the clip you're about to watch, the main character [Leonardo DiCaprio] talks about the dreams, reality & perception, but the concept that stands out is that while dreaming or in that state we are creating and perceiving at the same time .

---------> click this link to watch the movie clip [....sorry, Youtube wouldn't let me embed the clip]

This directly ties into free-styling because of the "stream of conscious" nature of free-styling. Writing rhymes down allows you to correct, perfect, erase or do over, however when free-styling, there are no do overs and very little time to "consciously" think about what you are saying.  In essence, you think of what you're going to say NANOSECONDS before saying it, almost as your subconscious is doing the thinking. Thereby controlling an unconscious creation that manifests in real time [LITERALLY BEING IN THE MOMENT]. What is even more amazing is that this is a fundamental skill in an art form that gets negative attention for the perceived lack of skills that is needed to be considered an art form by the music community at large.
I hope this post helps you see the connection and take time to understand more about "Inception [ both the movie and the physiological phenomenon] PIECE------------------------> Enoch's Light

the other day my buddy [javiar] hipped me to this young lady. She reminds me of an MC Lyte or Monie Love enhanced  with skills  that could only come from years of studying lyrically gifted emcees + with  5 parts southern flow mixed to keep it relevant. Shatara brings a nice flow; great timing, thoughtfulness with a witty and self awareness that balances out the bragadocio [ "swag"] rhyming ...originality not so much [but really, who in this world has been privy to experience original thought or style for that matter( especially when it comes to music) ].

What about the beats, the beats, the beats ?  I'm definitely feelin' this track...the rest of her bandcamp page is laden with covers of popular songs [which is cool but,  mainstream songs are  run into the ground]  All in all,  even mainstream Deejays will be able to take a crack at this during a set [possibly earlier in the night...depending on where you spin at] Overall i think its positive and awesome to an  emcee of this caliber at a young age.  She has a long career ahead of her if she stays true to herself. - DJ Enochs Light

Who is Black Milk?

As the buzz of many of hip hop's young leaders-to-be evolves from loud commotion into hushed whispers, Black Milk has stayed relevant by remaining focused on creating music that endures. He's achieved recognition from fans, critics, and his peers as one of the best producers around, and when coupling that talent with his sharp lyricism and stylish delivery as an emcee, Black has proven to be one of the most vital hip hop artists of his generation
